Gamblers Gamble / Grinders Grind

A “Gambler” buys lotto tickets (and occassionaly bets on Roulette with the Mortgage Money).
(C’mooooOOOn Lucky “7″- Daddy needs a new pair of Oakleys!!!)

A “Grinder” on the other hand, is an Educated Risk Taker:

Grinding: Playing in a style with minimal risk-
and modest gains-
over a long period of time. (Career)

Poker Math #101

Understanding the Math:

“Outs”-
The number of cards left in the deck that will improve your hand.
-I had four hearts on the turn- so I had only 9 outs left to make my flush.

“Pot Odds”-
The odds U get when analyzing the current size of the pot vs. your very next call.
-”There’s $200 already in the pot, and my sole opponnent has only $20 left as a bet coming to me- so my Pot Odds are good to call regardless of what river card comes.”

“Bet Odds”-
The odds you get as a result of evaluating the number of callers to a raise or bet.
With a 1:5 chance of hitting another heart to complete my nut flush draw- I have good Bet Odds, because I know all 6 of these guys will call my bet.

“Implied Odds”-
The odds you are getting after the assumed result of betting for the remainder of the hand- (based on the momentum of the current betting.)
Since I assume these guys will call the turn AND the river with their short stacks- even with only Top Pair my Implied Odds are excellent!
-( even if another heart doesn’t come to complete my flush.)

Poker Tells Top-10

What is a Poker Tell?

A tell is any habit, behavior, or physical reaction, that gives other players more information about your hand. The following are supplied by the pros, and can apply against novice or advanced players.
Warning: Remember, that in poker there are many contradictions and exceptions to the rule. Also, experienced pros will give out false tells to fool players.
A False (Conscious) Tell is a “Trick” or “Trap“- generally if U sense a Trick or a Trap- do the
OPPOSITE of what the “phony” Tells is suggesting/directing you to do.

Watch the Eyes

This is why many pros wear sunglasses or visors/caps when playing, they know that the eyes rarely lie. For eg. many players can’t help but stare at big hole cards, so their length of time peeking is longer. Conversely, if a player is looking to steal the pot, he may look to his left to see if the remaining players, who haven’t yet acted, have quickly glanced at their cards and are likely to fold. Another eg., a player may try to ask you questions about your hand, knowing that people rarely can “look someone straight in the eyes” while being dishonest.

Facial Expression
Again, many pros try to disguise their entire face by wearing a cap and looking downward. This is to avoid the classic stare down that poker pros are famous for. They may try to study your face for nervousness (detecting a weak hand), or even look for repetitive characteristics like a body “tic”. You may have obvious unhappiness in your face when your hand is weak, and conversely, you may show a contrasting show of confidence when your hand is strong.

Weak is Strong/Strong is Weak
In its most simplistic form, this usually applies to novice players but frequently applies to pros as well. Basically, players like to be actors, and when they have a monster hand they tend to look disinterested. eg. “Oh, is it my turn to act” or “Oh I guess I will play these cards”. Alternatively, a player increasing the level of his voice while raising the pot, and trying to look intimidating. may be running a bluff.

Anxiety
Anxiety typically occurs in people when they are confronted, or anticipating confrontation. Psychologists call this the “Fight or Flight” stimulus response, which links back to the days when we were cavemen/cave women. Physical changes happen including flexing of muscles, eye pupil dilation, palpitating heart rate, dry throat. In poker, when someone has a big hand they are typically ready for confrontation and can exhibit some of these characteristics. You may see the chest expanding abnormally, or you may notice the players voice become slightly higher as he makes a comment. Some of the top players in the game will stare at the vein on the top-side of your face for blood pressure changes. During a bluff, the player may demonstrate anxiety, but if he knows he will fold the hand if re-raised (non-confrontational end) may look quite comfortable.

Trembling Hands
Also, a byproduct of anxiety, beware of a player whose hands are shaking, this nervousness can represent a big hand.
Glance at Chips
Again, relating to the eyes. It is common for players to quickly glance at their chips if they connect with the board after a Flop for example. This may be a subconscious reaction, but the player is already planning his attack.

Peeking Hole Cards on Flop
Some players will take another look at their hole cards when, for example, the board is showing a potential 3 card flush draw. Typically, the player is looking to see if one of his cards is connecting, because he remembers only that the two cards are different suits.

Repetitive Betting Patterns
Usually the most revealing tells are based on the way a player habitually bets during particular situations. For example, maybe the player always checks when he has made the nuts, or a player may regularly fold after being re-raised.

Body Posture/Attitude
Some players show obvious changes in their posture based on their attitude/hand strength. For instance, you may notice their shoulders drop/slump when they are not confident (weak hand). Conversely, you may notice the player is very attentive and sitting in an erect position when he has strength. You may also notice that a player who bluffs a lot, leans forward in a confrontational way… remember Strong is Weak!

Chip Stacking
When you first sit down at a table, study the way the players stack their chips. Although it is a generalization, loose aggressive players typically maintain unorganized/sloppy stacks, while tight conservative players keep well organized/neat stacks.

Top #10 Poker Tips

Top 10 Poker Tips

1) Playing the Right Number of Starting Hands. Most beginners play way too many starting hands, in fact top players typically play between 20-30% of their starting hands. Concentrate on higher value starting hands and help remove the luck element of the game.

2) Know when to hold’em, and know when to fold’em. Learn how to fold a hand, and don’t be a calling machine. Many beginners keep betting regardless of the board or what their opponent’s actions are suggesting. Top players frequently say it’s the hands you can lay down that are often the key to profitable play.

3) Choose less skillful opponents. If you want to win money. Sounds fairly obvious, but you should play at betting limits where you can beat the majority of players. Move down in limits if you are having difficulties winning money. In poker, always leave your ego at the door.

4) Watch your opponents habits. Especially when you aren’t in a hand. The best time to study is when you aren’t emotionally invested in the hand, and you can make more prudent observations. Watch how opponents bet, and how much they bet, in what position are they betting. Learning how your opponents play is key.

5) Bet aggressively to gain knowledge. Betting is not always because you have the best hand. Top players use various betting techniques to try to gain information. For example, a defensive bet is one that you can use early on to avoid calling a bigger future bet. A re-raise may be used to probe the credibility of your opponent’s hand.

6) GHOSTING :Learn to put your opponents on a hand. Once you have mastered Tips #4 & #5, it is time to put your knowledge to work. Try putting yourself in your opponents shoes, and learn to put them on a hand. Ask questions like “Why did he re-raise me that amount?, and “Why did he only call in the previous betting round?, “Maybe because he only called me, he has a kicker problem?

7) Learn how to bluff and semi-bluff. At the right times against the right players, and at the right frequency. Bluffing is often a misunderstood concept, and much to many beginner’s dismay most pros use bluffs quite sparingly. A bluff can be very effective when used rarely, and where there is a seemingly low risk of being called by your opponent.

8) Change Gear. Unpredictability can be good. Most pros can figure out a really loose player by waiting for the nuts and being patient. However, an even easier opponent is a tight player or “rock, who plays only the Group 1 type hands. You need to change your game up, and let them see that you can run bluffs, and can play some lower value starting hands. These changes should be subtle and shouldn’t dramatically affect the flop rate we mentioned in Tip #1.

9) Understand player position. And how it is critical. Not only is it important to play strong hands, it is even more important in what position you play them. For example, the ideal position is the Button (the Dealer), as you are last to act, and have the advantage of watching all of the betting action before you need to make a decision. eg. If the action before you consists of a bet, a raise, and a re-raise, and you hold a pair of Tens, you might think that folding is the right decision.

10) CANI! Read books, take notes, take classes, create a superior peer group, and have a Mentor. Players can always learn more if they want to be a better poker player. Keep notes on what works and doesn’t work for you, and eventually you will come up with a style of play that works uniquely for you and improves your game.

There was a pause as she struggled.
Looking kinna-stunned she said: Oh dissapointedly…-

“ROUNDERS” review

It’s rare that you can play in a poker game and go through the whole night without someone quoting at least one line from the movie. (Or assuming the accent of Teddy/KGB) Ask a random person how many times they have seen the movie and they will probably say never. Ask a poker player the same question and you will rarely get an answer below -”a dozen”.
Hm, a movie where: the hero decides to devote his full energy to his poker passion.
Can’t imagine why that triggers some of my buttons.*lol*
Go figure.
:)

One criticism about a few of the characters was that some (like Knish) didn’t seem “dramatic” and “vivid” and “adventerous” enough… But to the critics I say: some players are not all about being “Drama” queens nor ShowBoats. They are professional poker players and not gamblers. They play a million hands of poker over a lifetime and no one hand will make them or break them. Their grind-out-a-living lifestyle is the gambling equivalent of a 9-5 job. How exciting would it be to film your 9-to-5 cubicle job? Not much. And that’s the point. These are everyday guys who go to work every day and put in 8 hours (okay, maybe more like 22 hours…) just like you. The poker-as-a-career aspect of this movie isn’t about a bunch of guys wildly betting their life savings. It is a juxtaposition of the pure gamblers who have no legitimate potential of accomplishing anything as a poker player and the “real deal” poker professionals who are interested in building skills and growing as a player ongoingly.

In my opinion? Joey Knish, is the real “hero” of the movie. Knish “grinds out” session after session with high EV premium hands and doesn’t take any “gambles”. (and doesn’t even take many risks.)
Knish plays just to make a living.
Knish is the true “Hero” of the film- for he works “the Real World” of a poker professional.
Hey, he’s got kids to feed. Rent. He WORKS for a living.

Knish’s goal is steadiness.
If Kinish were a professional investor - he would be be investing in bonds, while Mike McDermott would be a day-trader …

Worm: “…You should have played those Kings, Mike.”

Worm: “You know what always cheers me up? Rolled up aces over kings. Check-raising stupid tourists and taking huge pots off of them. Stacks and towers of checks I can’t even see over. Playing all-night high-limit Hold’em at the Taj, where the sand turns to gold.”

Mike: “I’m sorry John, I don’t remember.”

Mike: “I have what is called the wheel. It has earthy undertones, a smooth draw and enough kick to give me the high and the low.”

Worm: “welp….as my Unlce Les used to say..: “When the money is gone? It’s time to move on!”

Mike: “You fucked his mother.”

Mike: “In the book :”Confessions of a Winning Poker Player”-Author/Jack King said :”Few players recall big pots they have won strange as it seems, but every player can remember with remarkable accuracy the outstanding tough beats of his career.”

Random Guy: “Does he look like a man beaten by jacks!?!!”

and the quote I love as my new fav:

On “Luck”

People ask: “Hey, c’mon now…Isn’t poker “gambling” and just alot of “luck“?

Poker for the Professional has (approximately) the same amount of “gamble” and “luck” involved in professionally racing motor cross bikes.

Poker is a SKILL BUSINESS.

Some “wanna-be’s” and “amateurs” have been known to “drink and drive”- sure, but NOT the professionals.
Professionals know:

Ur profession is NOT a “game”.
Nor do they treat it as such.

Sure, I may talk about “Luck”-to the donkies at the table…but I am not a “gambler” as a professional poker player.

I am an educated “Risk-Taker“.

U take risks when driving a car, choosing a mate, staying at a job, passing on an opprotunity or taking a bath.

On the matter of “luck”?- At the profesional level there is about as much “luck” involved as getting into the Top Ten of American Idol.

So …to drive the point home: *** Pop Quiz ***
Q. “What’s the diffrence between a gambler trying to “get lucky” and a Large Pepperoni Pizza with extra cheese?”
A. “The Large Pizza CAN FEED A FAMILY OF FOUR!!!” *lol*

Now go out there and play some poker, (or take a bath)- but do it with some passion people.

Until Next Go.

Poker Positions

Today we will focus on “POSITION”.

As in racing- poker favours POSITION!

When we speak of position people often only think of late position. Late Position -(LP) being advantageous due to the fact that one in late position gets much more information on who has done what and to whom well before it is their turn to act.
LP=Prime Betting Position

In tournament play (sometimes Ca$h games too)- Chip Position- (CP) is important because of the intimidation factor it has to a weaker opponnent. (Or an observant one.)
With many chips once can FORCE OPPONNENTS to MAKE TOUGH (all in/ AI) DECISIONS. This is one of your primary goal during your poker career-btw. The more (tough) decision that your opponnent(s) are forced to make- the higher probability they will make a higher number of Unwise (costly) decisions.
With few chips (short-stacked) one can force others to be threatened of your willingness to move AI when the right odds present themselves- thus forcing wise players to be much more cautious (timid) around you and your short stack.
U must create “timidness” at YOUR table.

Which bings us to: Image Position (IP)-
“He who dominates your table-
is destined to take all the chips.”

Tournament Position-(TP) is important in that a wise player will always calculate where they are at within a particular stage in a tournament. KNOW HOW AND WHEN TO “CA$H IN and CA$H out”.

I wish to stress the importance of some not so addressed areas of poker: Early Position and Middle Position.

Early Position-(EP) is the most advantageous (especially in NL poker) to DRIVE OUT opponnents.Raising is easier to do by far than calling.
One can go All-In-Pre-Flop (AIPF) with a pair of dueces in early position- but, it would be a death-wish to call an AI with a pair of deuces.
Players normally play PH only from EP- therefore a raise by U (if u play wisely*) - will be interpreted as a PH Raise.
*Wisely= Playing very few hands. PH w/ SA
EP=Prime Drive Out Position

Middle Position-(MP) is an underused AI position when sandwiched between a beaten player to your left, and a tight rock or bluffer to your left.
MP=Prime “Killer Poker” Position

Combine these Poker Distinctions- and you’ll be on the inside track to earning $100k + in the Ultimate Sport.

‘Til next time- “Ratch”

and if Ur honest answer is “No”? FOLD.

Oh, yeah…

Play with SA. Selective Aggression.

So remeber- Value Bet (VB) WISELY

EV

Expected Value =“Do I expect to win?”
( based on mathamatical odds, chip position, table texture, momentum, table position, table image, player types remaining, effective ghosting, and intuition)

I always tell poker players: “THINK”
Do the factors now indicate that I will win?

From your perspective-
if you consistently play High EV hands-
you will profit much more consistently.

Premium Hands

As Jonny Cochran was fond of saying whilst practicing the art of poker :
“If the Flop don’t fit…then U must Acquit!”

F2=”Flop… or Fold!”-that is the Professional’s Mott0..
But what does that really mean?

Let’s take a closer look:
71% of your final hand revealed on the Flop.

What you are seeking it to start with a PH- or
PREMIUM HAND.
1) Pairs a) big; b) medium; c) small
2) Suited Connectors a) big; b) medium; c) small

5) UNsuited cards a) big; b) medium; c) small
6) Rags a) No kicker; Big+small; b) runts; c) disjointed

What is POKER about?

Many would answer- “Just WIN, baby!” “Poker is all about Winning.”
I disagree.
Poker is not all about “winning”.
Poker is not all about focusing on: “the win”.

Instead, focus on business related ATAG’s.
Focus on the ACTIONS that achieve the ultimate goal and outcome of ending a session profitably.

Poker is about WISE DECISIONS.

If you are able to make wise decisions, during intense psychological confrontation, while experiencing extreme personal financal volitility- then you have the makings of a Professional at the Poker Tables.

When U are “in the market” or “at the tables”- it is all about the Business of Poker.

Ultimately being Profitable and having consistent winning sessions is not about winning the most number of hands or pots, it is not about winning the biggest pot of the the night, it is not about winning the most pots of the night.

Distraction. Compulsion. Intoxication. Collusion?
During this swirling turmoil-U must constantly remind Urself that U are at work.
Stay focused on the Business of Poker.
Stay focused on the Decision at Hand.
Now.
In THIS moment.

Premium Hands PH that have a Positive Expectation PE combined with
Selective Aggression SA and sensory acuity sa that hold an
Expected Value or EV that is high given the existing Card Count is the essence of what your required focus must be in order to ensure that U have an overall winning session/quarter/year.

Four Spiritual Laws

Just as there are physical laws that govern the physical universe, so are there spiritual laws which govern your relationship with God.

Intresting Article I came across:

—————————————————————————
Spiritual Law #1
God LOVES you and offers a wonderful PLAN for your life.

(References contained on this Home Page are linked to the actual verses from the Bible and should be read in context wherever possible.)

God’s Love
“God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16 NIV).

God’s Plan
[Christ speaking] “I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly” [that it might be full and meaningful] (John 10:10).

Why is it that most people are not experiencing the abundant life?
Because…

——————————————————————————–
Spiritual Law #2
Man is SINFUL and SEPARATED from God. Therefore, he cannot know and experience God’s love and plan for his life.

Man Is Sinful
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
Man was created to have fellowship with God; but, because of his stubborn self-will, he chose to go his own independent way, and fellowship with God was broken. This self-will, characterized by an attitude of active rebellion or passive indifference, is an evidence of what the Bible calls sin.

Man Is Separated
“The wages of sin is death” [spiritual separation from God] (Romans 6:23). Heaven and Hell are real destinations and the ultimate choice is ours. “… those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus … will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord …” (2 Thessalonians. 1:8,9; NIV)

This diagram illustrates that God is holy and man is sinful. A great gulf separates the two. The arrows illustrate that man is continually trying to reach God and the abundant life through his own efforts, such as a good life, philosophy, or religion - but he inevitably fails.
The third law explains the only way to bridge this gulf…

——————————————————————————–
Spiritual Law #3
Jesus Christ is God’s ONLY provision for man’s sin. Through Him you can know and experience God’s love and plan for your life.

He Died in Our Place
“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

He Rose From the Dead
“Christ died for our sins…He was buried…He was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures…He appeared to Peter, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred…” (1 Corinthians 15:3-6).

He Is the Only Way to God
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me’” (John 14:6).

This diagram illustrates that God has bridged the gulf which separates us from Him by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place to pay the penalty for our sins.
It is not enough just to know these three laws…

——————————————————————————–
Spiritual Law #4
We must individually RECEIVE Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; then we can know and experience God’s love and plan for our lives.

We Must Receive Christ
“As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12)

We Receive Christ Through Faith
“By grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9).

When We Receive Christ, We Experience a New Birth
(Read John 3:1-8.)

We Receive Christ by Personal Invitation
[Christ speaking] “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him” (Revelation 3:20).

Receiving Christ involves turning to God from self (repentance) and trusting Christ to come into our lives to forgive our sins and to make us what He wants us to be. Just to agree intellectually that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for our sins is not enough. Nor is it enough to have an emotional experience. We receive Jesus Christ by faith, as an act of the will.

The following explains how you can receive Christ:

You Can Receive Christ Right Now by Faith Through Prayer
(Prayer is talking to God)

God knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart.

The following is a suggested prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be.” Amen

Again, God knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart.

Creating the Competitive Poker Edge

“Let me offer some insight. You’re playing in a game where people 3 bet you from the blinds with 7+2.
When you lose one of these hands, the poker-gods snicker at you— and you take hidieous beats.
But when they hold up 90% of the time, you don’t pay…AND you don’t pay any notice.
Thats how you can still have a winning day. “

Poker Profits come from finding or creating (albeit sometimes microscopic) mathamatical advatages v. your opponnent(s). Just like the House Advantage (in Roulette or BlackJack) your most consistent profits come from “whittle-ing away” at your opponnent’s chip stack.
Consistent Profits come from calculated attacks when you have a slight (physicological or) mathamatical advantage.

Sometimes these unseen “wins” (v. the “horrific beats”) are nearly invisible - and no one at the table comments on them.

Key components for a Professional Poker Player:
Mathamatical advantage… physicological edge…
staying selectivly Aggressive in your actions.

In short: Be “The Voice”-

BECOME THE HOUSE at your Table

If Chris Moneymaker proved anything it is that anyone who is sufficiently aggressive can win any tournament at any time, regardless of their actual skill level.

The best coaching for someone looking to “Make it Big” in the poker world? To “Be as Big as they can Be”- would be to continue to Sattelite and Super-Sattelite (weekly) while consistently creating a (mathamatical and/or pschycological) Edge while recording your poker results with a passion.

Create the competitive EDGE, and CANI! your game ongoingly.

Keep stacking Chips. Keep ‘em and Cash ‘em out.
Record your profits for the session, day, week, month, quarter, and year- and you will find that these small consitstent wins add up to make up the majority of your Annual Poker Earnings.

And for the curious? Asking: “And where is The Ratchet along this Poker Trail….?”
According to one of my mentors (a successful, international poker professional) when asked for a brutally honest evaluation: “…you have an excellent raw talent and will be extremely formidable once you have worked out some of your financial “kinks’ and your bankroll challenges…”

With that, I am currently focusing on un-doing the “kinks” in my “financial-kinkiness”.

Now clear the Rail!
