The Conversation:
Q: What is the Christian position to the following:
(para-phrased)
An Eskimo was chatting with a Missionary about Christianity, and the Eskimo asked:
“Would I go to hell if I never heard of Jesus Christ?”
The Missionary said:
“I don’t think so “– (vs. KNOW so)
“that would be ” (in my opinion)
“Unjust” (?) … (I think?) (as I know it from my humble mere mortal perspective and human understanding).
To which the Eskimo replied:
“Then why did you tell me?â€?
(an unsaved, self-consideredinnocent about Him (Christianity))
A. Our “personal feelings of Fairness or what is “UnJust are irrelevant.
God is our Ultimate Judge, - we can only suppose how He will execute judgment to those who have never heard the gospel.
* * * * * * *
So …let’s see what the Bible says:
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved…” (Acts 16:31)
Jesus declared that He is the only way to God (John 14:6). Paul referred to all who don’t know Jesus as `those who are perishing’ (2 Cor. 4:3)
In other words: all who have never heard the gospel will perish in hell.
As to whether this is fair or not (just or Unjust)?
The only thing we can do is: Trust that ALL of God’s ways are just.
The greatest attribute of God is that He is a God of love.
God loves all mankind so much so that He sent His Son to die on the cross to save us from the punishment for our sins. And the way we receive this salvation is by accepting Christ as our personal Savior. God’s love for all mankind entails making sure that every person not only hears about Christ’s atonement but is given the chance to fully accept it as well. And it was for this very reason that Jesus commanded His disciples, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature (including the above mentioned “Eskimo”* )
(Mark 16:15). It was Jesus Himself who commanded that the gospel is to be preached throughout the world.
This answers the “WHY of the Missionary feeling compelled to preach the Gospel (to the Eskimo..And Beyond!*)
NOW…Let’s Address the bigger QUESTION:
What DOES happen to those who are genuinely “ignorant of God? Is ignorance of God’s Law a legitimate defense?
Q. Will all those people who have never heard of Jesus Christ (and accepted Him as Lord and Savior) be condemned to Hell?
First we must note what the Bible says:
A.“God will judge ALL people righteously.
So…What Happens to:
a) That one “innocentâ€? Eskimo (atheist, un-saved hippie, pygmi, or similar)- Should he be punished for just living peacefully?- living a good life and not hurting anybody? - Is hell a punishment to man for not living a “Good Lifeâ€? as best he/she could? No. Hell is a by-product of Man’s own Sin- and as the Bible states: ALL have sinned. The basic doctrine of Christianity is that ALL men are born in original sin, meaning that when we are born we are already sinners. It isn’t that we have a choice of whether we want to be sinners or not. We can’t help but sin. It’s in our genes. “Sun shinesâ€?- “Sinner’s Sin.” It is not what we do, but who we are that has us in this state.
b) The Unborn or Infant Children (those below the age of comprehension and choice) - When we talk about those who are ignorant of the gospel, there is another group of people who fit into this category that we generally don’t think of and that is children. They are certainly “ignorant” when it comes to understanding the gospel message, only because they don’t fully comprehend the importance of what is being said to them. (truly understand the concept of sin, along with the need to repent and accept the atonement of Christ) The vast majority of Christian faiths teach that all children go to heaven if they die before reaching the age of accountability. This would presumably include the children of unsaved parents as well. Luke18:16. Heaven is populated by little children…â€?. Matthew 18:3.” Although children are born in a state of sin, it is commonly believed that they are sheltered by the blood of Christ. If they die before they reach the age of accountability that means they have never had the opportunity to accept or reject the Savior. Most Christians believe that all dying infants are elect of God… God’s elective grace embraces all dying infants.
c) The majority of the 1.2 Billion citizens of China- Those who have no real religious belief because their government forbids them to- since the Chinese government forbids proselyting by any religion.
d) Isolated people on the planet that never make human contact with the outside (Christian) world (Word)- - there are untold billions of people throughout the history of the world who have never had the opportunity to hear the gospel message even once, let alone enough times to convince them to accept it. Including: All the people who are dying every year who have never even heard the name of Jesus Christ, let alone know what He did for them or why they need to believe in Him. (According to the Center for the Study of Global Christianity, in 2004 the unevangelized population of the world was more than 1.7 billion people. That’s how many people who have never heard the message of Christianity even once.) (The same can be said of the people who lived in the old Soviet Union during the forty years of Communist rule.)
note: It is groundless presumption to imagine that people have received no Christian revelation merely because they have had no contact with the Bible or with Christians. We have no way of knowing what God has revealed to His people.
e) Those people born before Christ, (with only an anticipation of a Savior)
f) Peoples with no earthly language or formal communication
g) Others: Those born Deaf, Dumb, and Blind or mentally incompetent- unable to perceive or comprehend the Christian’s understanding of Christ

Some have argued that “to send an ignorant person to hell would be unjust and contrary to God’s nature of love.”
But do we humans get to decide what is “Just or UnJust”? “Fair or UnFair”?
A deaf, female comedienne - with a marvelous sense of humour-at a Tony Robbins’s event I attended once said:“Want to make God laugh? You tell Him YOUR plan!”

On the one Eskimo’s “Innocence? (or Ignorance?) - Let’s take a closer look:
God has revealed Himself to everyone through the creation around us and the sense of right and wrong inside us (Romans 1:18-20). Each person knows enough about God that He says that the “truth is plainâ€? and we are all “without excuse.”
One explanation is that the ignorant: “have some knowledge of the true God”… Yes, their understanding is limited… [in that] they are certainly ignorant of Jesus as Christ. Then what will happen to them? Some believe: “God will hold those who never hear the gospel responsible for what they did with the light they had in this world.” “The saving power of Jesus’ sacrifice has been extended even to them,” the ignorant. “There is apparently a sense in which God overlooks certain practices and/or ignorance until they become fully accountable by coming into contact with the gospel.” Some have concluded that God must somehow save the ignorant despite them never having heard of Christ. But is this True? Is this what the Bible teaches us? - No, this is NOT what Christianity teaches.
The very essence of the gospel is:
people need to believe in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
The scriptures tell us that there will come a time when every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philip. 2:10-11). But, if every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord, then that means every person has to know who Jesus is. And the only way that can happen is if everyone has been taught about Him or has a divine intervention / understanding. Even those who have rejected His offer of salvation will at least know who He is and ultimately be forced to admit they either accepted Him- or refused to accept Him. (Refusing; declining; post-poning to make a decision (or any other “alternate” choice (i.e. “loop-hole) is considered rejecting Him and is punishable by eternal damnation.)
It is groundless presumption to imagine that people have received no Christian revelation merely because they have had no contact with the Bible or with Christians. We have no way of knowing what God has revealed to His people.
Conclusion: “Trust in God’s Mercy“
If a person who never heard about Christ throws herself totally upon the mercy of God, not trusting in his/her own good deeds or any religious practices to give his/her merit before God, then it may be possible that the work of Christ on the cross would be applied to that person.
It is very important to notice that this does not mean that the devout person in any religion is therefore saved. Man-made religion does not represent our search for God, but rather our flight from the true knowledge of God. Only by casting oneself completely upon the mercy of God, and not counting on one’s deeds—religious or otherwise—for right standing with God, can anyone be saved.
We know that God wants us all to be saved (1 Timothy 2:3-4). However, it is not God, but sin which causes us to lose our souls. Sin separates us from God, not a lack of hearing the gospel.
And, unfortunately, we all have sinned. (Romans 3:23)
So what can we conclude?
We can trust in the sovereignty of God to execute justice in such cases as those listed above. All of ‘em. Each and every individual situation is accounted for by God.
God made man in His image with a conscience and inherent sense of morality. No man has to read the Bible to know it is wrong to kill or steal; we know it instinctively. Paul touches on this further in Romans 1:18-21, saying that God has manifested Himself in man and in His creation.
With only what God has shown us and revealed to us, we can know that God exists –
AND that we should seek Him.
Stated another way by Anthony Robbins:
“You will discover that there is a Single Question
that has dominated Ur entire Life.
With that knowledge, we can choose to glorify God and be thankful- or reject Him, becoming futile and foolish. God holds us without excuse for this. This leads to another very strong argument for God’s justice in such cases. Throughout Bible history, God has demonstrated His sovereignty of situations and His omniscience of the thoughts of men. If there were ever people who wanted to know and obey the truth, God always found a way for them to hear (Matthew 5:6). History teaches us we can trust God’s providence in these matters even today and take comfort in knowing that He knows our hearts.
If anyone does begin to respond to God and seek Him, God progressively reveals more Truth.
“You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart”
Jeremiah 29:13
Trust in God’s omnipotent love and mercy.
For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have Everlasting Life.”- John 3:16
Although the Bible does not give us the complete answers to all these possible questions, it does tell us that:
God “will judge the world in righteousness and ALL people with equity (Divine fairness)” (Psalms 98:9)
Trust in God’s Mercy
